Pre-conference course #1 – Incident Investigation (Full Day - no prerequisite)
Instructor: Bruce Jackson, Canadian Society of Safety Engineering
Investigating workplace incidents is one of the most important responsibilities of the health and safety practitioner. This hands-on, interactive workshop is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to effectively investigate incidents, and develop recommendations to prevent them from recurring. Participants will not only learn about modern investigation methodologies, but also how to apply them when investigating incidents in their workplaces. The workshop will cover topics such as:
-
The applicable regulatory framework
-
Accident theory
-
Human factors in incident investigations
-
Recommendations to prevent recurrence
Participants will work in groups to apply their skills to investigate a mock incident.
Pre-conference course #2 – Fall Protection Defined (Full Day - no prerequisite)
Instructor: Derek Malone, Hazmasters
This eight hour course on fall protection is a pre-requisite to the Fall Protection Advanced course. It will take new and veteran users through a journey of discovery that is controlled by the students. The curriculum includes: a review of the regulations and guidelines related to working at heights, creating and following fall protection plans, the creation and discussion on systems, overview of system inspection, fit and choice of harnesses, force reduction, rescue considerations, basic knots and student driven discussions on any work at heights subject.
Students who are willing will be suspended in a full body harness. This course will reinforce the need for elimination of work at heights and the restraint of workers who cannot. Fall Protection Defined is a politics-free, non-biased course with the aim of solving elevated work hazards as a group.
Pre-conference course #3 – Fall Protection Advanced (Full Day - prerequisite is Fall Protection Defined)
Instructor: Cal Beale, Hazmasters
Pre-requisite: Fall Protection Defined
This eight hour course is an in-depth follow up to Fall Protection Defined. It’s meant for supervisors, managers, and users with inquiring minds on the deeper issues of fall protection. It takes the basic topics of equipment inspection, ladders, the fall protection hierarchy, systems analysis, and systems design, plus the timely topic of rescue, to the next level.
Students will do hands-on work with both flawed and non-flawed gear. In group sessions and individually, students will adjudicate existing fall protection systems and work to create new ones by focusing on the written fall protection work plan. In the rescue portion, students will learn and use various rescue techniques and theory that are essential in the event of a fall protection emergency.
This course is a must for anyone with a desire to learn more than just the basics of fall protection.
Pre-conference course #4 – Hazard Recognition and Control (Full Day - no prerequisite)
Instructor: Terry Duncan, Safety Consultant
This one-day session is designed to provide participants with the information, knowledge, and tools to assess the hazards associated with a work process and to develop remedies for the control of those hazards.
This session will provide participants with a brief history of the process involved, an overview of some of the rating systems which are used in hazard assessment systems, and some methods of interpreting the information collected and how to adapt the information for the development of safe work procedures that will either eliminate or reduce the hazards associated with the tasks.
During this session we will discuss a number of different formats for hazard assessments and we will use one of these to assess the hazards of a number of scenarios which will be presented.
